I started paying attention to the Texas legislature in middle school, and since then, I’ve seen firsthand how their policies have shaped the opportunities available to me and those around me. By restricting funding, they’ve denied the next generation access to the American Dream. One example is the Texas House’s decision to judge schools using an A-F rating system based solely on standardized testing. This approach incentivizes schools to focus only on test preparation, often at the expense of fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Meanwhile, private schools cherry-pick students who already excel academically, creating the illusion of a superior education system while leaving public school students behind. This disparity undermines public education and widens the gap in opportunity.
To address these issues, we must fully fund public education and incentivize schools to implement hands-on programs in partnership with local colleges and trade schools. By connecting K-12 education with higher education and career training, we can provide students with a deeper, more practical education that prepares them for college, trade school, or the workforce.
Texas has continued cutting education funding year after year, reducing student programs and limiting opportunities. These cuts don’t just affect classrooms, they impact families and undermine our future workforce. I’m running to restore investment in public education, protect student programs, and make college and career pathways more accessible so Texas can build a stronger future instead of selling it short.
